The thermal waters of Luchon are sodic, alkaline, hyperthermal sulfurous waters, whose sulfur content is one of the highest in Europe.
Their temperature is respectively 72°C, 65°C and 50°C. The circulation of the waters in the rock is particularly long: a carbon 14 dating evaluates their age at 14 000 years.
Until 1979, 18 springs, distinct by their temperature, sulphuration, flow and radioactivity, were grouped according to their location in the galleries, in North and South groups. The water streams were collected in 118 griffins distributed in the galleries dug in the rock, behind and along the thermal buildings. The mixing of these sulphurous waters, deep and hot, with the surface waters linked to precipitations, of much lower temperature, could generate pollution risks. To remedy this situation, several drillings were carried out, the last one in 2009.
